The exhibition explores the impact of 3D printing on society. If the industrial revolution at the end of the 18th century made possible the mass production of consumer goods, radically transforming the economy and society as a whole, now a new manufacturing technology is emerging which promises just the opposite: production on an individual scale. 3D printing makes possible the creation of objects which can be customized according to the requirements of any user. This new system undermines economies of scale, questioning the need to manufacture hundreds or thousands of units in order to lower the cost of products with the aim of finally reaching consumers. Consumers can now become producers, prosumers, presenting a challenge to our entire mode of production, from how we design, produce and distribute products to consumers, to issues of intellectual property rights and even security.
